Encore Surfacing just finished cleaning and prepping a brand new deck. The wood used was the exotic hardwoods that must be cleaned carefully and sealed as soon as possible. We used specialized cleaners, scrub brush and water from the faucet. High water pressure is never needed on new wood but it must be completely rinsed.

A bid was also given to repair an older deck, pressure wash and seal. This deck has an unfortunate common problem. It was built around three Oak trees. The space for the trunk was too small for normal growth and the trees were being damaged at the base and about 8 feet up by the shade structure. Luckily, the trees have shown no obvious signs of stress and should be fine after the repairs are completed. Also, the seating area and backrest will have to be sanded otherwise splinters will be found in an uncomfortable area of the body.

Summer times brings time out on your beautiful deck! Unfortunately, when you spend time outside you see that it needs to be renewed or resealed.

Encore Surfacing has just completed two estimates for deck renewal. The first was a basic estimate to clean and seal and the second was very complex. The second deck had been painted red and then ignored for over 7 years. The result is most of the paint is long gone and a lot of the wood will have to be replaced. All the deck nails have popped up and the hand rail will be replaced. Maybe 10% of the deck boards will have to be replaced but this final judgment won’t be made until after cleaning and a careful inspection can be made. Sanding may be required due to all the splinters. Final actions to follow soon.

You’ve tried everything you know of to get that black mark off the porcelain tile or tub. Comet, bleach, tile cleaner . . . and nothing can take it off. Here are three things you can try.

It could be from caulk that is stuck on. Take a razor blade or very sharp knife and lightly scrape it off.

Lightly sand or scrub the mark using a green cleaning pad that is dry or 220 grit sandpaper. The black mark should vanish.

If all else fails, try Greased Lightning as a cleaner. It works really well on dirt and soap scum also. I recommend using Greased Lightning to all my clients!

If you are still having problems removing that black mark, call Stuart for more tips at 404-401-4667.

Resurfacing Process: The resurfacing process was standard for a clawfoot tub. First the exterior was carefully ground and sand blasted to remove the old finish. Casting roughness was repaired and a primer applied. Three coats of white were applied and allowed to cure, the tub was turned right side up, cleaned and repaired, and then three more coats of white were applied to the inside.

Next we got off the beaten track and applied 50 self sticking stars to each side of the clawfoot tub. They were sprayed blue and then removed leaving white stars for the flag. The stripes were laid out and painted red and finally three clear coats were applied.
